Summary

The revolutionary New York Times bestseller about powerful lifestyle changes that can fight and prevent cancer--an integrative approach based on the latest research

An international phenomenon, Anticancer has been a long-running bestseller in the U。S。 since Viking first published it in fall 2008。 Now, this updated edition draws on the most recent clinical studies and offers more tips on how people living with cancer can fight it and how healthy people can prevent it。 The new edition of Anticancer includes:
- More benefits of anticancer foods, including new alternatives to sugar and cautions about some that are now on the market
- New information about how vitamin D strengthens the immune system
- Warnings about common food contaminants that have recently been proven to contribute to cancer progression
- A new chapter on mind-body approaches to stress reduction, with recent studies that show how our reactions to stress can interfere with natural defenses and how friendships can support healing in ways never before understood
- A groundbreaking study showing that lifestyle modification, as originally proposed in Anticancer, reduces mortality for breast cancer by an astounding 68 percent after completion of treatment
- New supporting evidence for the entire Anticancer program

Recommended by a family member who went thru cancer treatment and a friend who is a cancer biologist and follows the diet recommendations in the book。 Not a “fun” read but useful to follow the science behind the diet recommendations。 The second half of the book I would recommend primarily for those in cancer treatment but the first half is great advice in general! Less high glycemic foods, more Asian and Mediterranean meals/ingredients!

My friend, diagnosed with brain cancer, found this book helpful。 It's always interesting when physicians get cancer to benefit from their perspectives。 DSS offers unconventional approaches that are meant to complement and work with your oncologist's recommendations。 DSS focuses on environment, diet, emotions, and physical activity。 Because of the fast-paced change in cancer treatment, this 2007 book seems a little dated。 Yet。 Garlic, leeks, Brussels, and broccoli are still considered excellent c My friend, diagnosed with brain cancer, found this book helpful。 It's always interesting when physicians get cancer to benefit from their perspectives。 DSS offers unconventional approaches that are meant to complement and work with your oncologist's recommendations。 DSS focuses on environment, diet, emotions, and physical activity。 Because of the fast-paced change in cancer treatment, this 2007 book seems a little dated。 Yet。 Garlic, leeks, Brussels, and broccoli are still considered excellent cancer-fighting foods。 Then there are the magnificent catechins found in green tea。 When a friend was going through breast cancer in 2005 she was told to drink 3 cups of green tea daily。 I remember they bought every box of green tea at the grocery store and tried to find the most palatable。 As I type this I am sipping matcha green tea。 Frankly, it tastes disgusting。 I'm hoping I can retrain my palate。 With my family history of cancer, I'm all for adopting a simple step like drinking green tea that might stave off metastases。 A large section of the book didn't click in with my Christian beliefs — I don't see meditation and prayer to the Almighty as the same thing。 But it didn't hurt me to read it and I sifted through his suggestions。 As a physician, one doesn't want to give false hope。 But DSS argues that one also shouldn't offer false hopelessness。 I like that。 Sadly, David Servan-Schreiber died of brain cancer at age 50 in 2011, almost twenty years from his first diagnosis。 。。。more

This is not a book for only those suffering a cancer diagnosis。 I picked this book up after learning my mother's cancer came back。 Looking for action items。 It is a fascinating read and it presents alot of research。 I wish it gave more information about types of studies and possible biases/barriers。 Overall- really enjoyed。 This is not a book for only those suffering a cancer diagnosis。 I picked this book up after learning my mother's cancer came back。 Looking for action items。 It is a fascinating read and it presents alot of research。 I wish it gave more information about types of studies and possible biases/barriers。 Overall- really enjoyed。 。。。more

After finding out at 26 years old that I am likely to have cancer the rest of my life, I needed a book that was informational but also compassionate to the struggles of a cancer patient。 This book was everything I wanted and more, and showed me there are things I can do in my daily life to slow the spread of my disease and maximize my quality of life。 This was such an encouraging read during an otherwise incredibly discouraging season of life。 The author was so positive and conversational which After finding out at 26 years old that I am likely to have cancer the rest of my life, I needed a book that was informational but also compassionate to the struggles of a cancer patient。 This book was everything I wanted and more, and showed me there are things I can do in my daily life to slow the spread of my disease and maximize my quality of life。 This was such an encouraging read during an otherwise incredibly discouraging season of life。 The author was so positive and conversational which kept the subject matter light and easy to understand。 I especially enjoyed the discussion of the author’s own battle with cancer sprinkled in throughout the scientific studies presented。My only qualm with this book is that I am about 13 years late to reading it, which isn’t the fault of the book hence the 5 star rating。 I hope that in the time since this book was released, further studies have been performed on the theories presented and that there is even more research to support his claims。 I didn’t realize how long ago this book was published until about halfway through, and I am so sad to find that the author has since lost his battle with cancer。 I will definitely be reading Dr。 Servan-Schreiber’s other books and searching for similar books written more recently。 。。。more

A lot of great advice for general healthier living for ANYONE, not just those who have faced cancer。 I appreciated that Servan-Schreiber emphasized that these lifestyle changes complement modern medicine, as I am grateful for the surgery and poisons that also killed the cancer。 Will be working to implement some of these suggestions!

This is not just for people who have cancer! Some compelling research about how nutrition, exercise, the mind-body connection and social connection can allow our bodies to better prevent and battle disease。

A good book with plenty of tips as well as habits and dietary changes on how to live a healthy way of life to avoid cancer。

I generally thought that this was a good read - though, without actually having cancer, I think that most people reading this book would be fairly unlikely to make many of the changes he suggests (I'm included in that group)。 I think that he has great suggestions - but I think many of them are probably too drastic for most。 That being said - I will likely read again in the near future, because I do think it has good ideas about general lifestyle and diet that I think worth implementing。 I generally thought that this was a good read - though, without actually having cancer, I think that most people reading this book would be fairly unlikely to make many of the changes he suggests (I'm included in that group)。 I think that he has great suggestions - but I think many of them are probably too drastic for most。 That being said - I will likely read again in the near future, because I do think it has good ideas about general lifestyle and diet that I think worth implementing。 。。。more

This is an older title, at least in terms of medical research: originally published in the US in 2008 and then revised in 2010。 It was written by a French professor of clinical psychology who was diagnosed with brain cancer when he was in his early 30s。 After a recurrence, he gradually built up a bank of research-based and anecdotal knowledge on ways people with cancer can improve their chances of survival, including through their diet, exercise, environment, stress levels, and mental health。 Th This is an older title, at least in terms of medical research: originally published in the US in 2008 and then revised in 2010。 It was written by a French professor of clinical psychology who was diagnosed with brain cancer when he was in his early 30s。 After a recurrence, he gradually built up a bank of research-based and anecdotal knowledge on ways people with cancer can improve their chances of survival, including through their diet, exercise, environment, stress levels, and mental health。 This book is a memoir of his experiences combined with his recommendations for living an anticancer life, along with copious footnotes pointing to the research studies that back up the lifestyle。 Sadly, while Dr。 Servan Schreiber survived for 19 years after his initial diagnosis; he passed away in 2011。 Honestly, I was a little skeptical of this book when I jumped into it。 There is a lot of information out there about lifestyle changes you can take to prevent cancer from recurring, or to prevent you from getting cancer in the first place。 When you are living with metastatic cancer, though, that kind of advice can feel accusatory (like, “you wouldn’t have cancer if you had just done these things!”) or like it came too late, since the cancer has already spread。 Other times, this kind of instruction can feel either too general (eat healthy and exercise is pretty good advice for everyone for all kinds of reasons) or like a snake oil pitch to get you to buy some supplements or a diet plan。 Dr。 Servan-Schreiber’s angle is that many things in our modern Western lifestyle and environment can cause cells to mutate and cancer to begin to develop, but what we can do is control the terrain of our bodies so that those almost inevitable mutations don’t grow or spread。 And, for those of us who already have cancer -- even if it is advanced, metastatic, or incurable -- taking steps to improve the terrain of our bodies can help our traditional cancer treatments work more effectively。 And, you know, I think that makes a lot of sense。 Certainly at times I wonder why I got cancer or why it wasn’t found until it was metastatic。 Mostly I feel pretty confident that it was out of my control and, as a pragmatic person by nature, that it doesn’t really matter at this point anyway。 I remember when I was first diagnosed feeling almost embarrassed and guilty that I hadn’t done something right and that is why I ended up with this diagnosis, but I've learned that while they can make some broad generalizations and name some risk factors, overall doctors don’t really know why some people get cancer and others don’t, and why some cancers spread and others don’t。 And, if we take that into account, I think making lifestyle changes like the ones Dr。 Servan-Schriber recommends aren’t a ticket to a cure or something that should dominate your life, but they certainly can’t hurt。 And if they make us feel better, both because they are letting us have a little agency, but also because eating good food and exercising and mindfulness and stress reduction are all good things for helping us to enjoy life, then why not dip in and give some of this a try?Any medical advice that is 10 years old needs to be taken with a grain of salt, but this was a very readable and thought-provoking book and one that I’m glad I read。 It also contains one of the most helpful lay-person explanations of how cancer starts, grows, and spreads that I have read so far。 Not too technical, but not too elementary either。 Honestly, the book is worth reading just for that! 。。。more

Many of us, from 1 in 4 to possibly 1 in 2, will eventually have cancer。 I wanted to understand if there were anything I could do to help me。 Anti-cancer describes simple lifestyle changes that could significantly reduce your chances of developing the disease。

Eye opener when it comes about what we eat, that cancer doesn't have to be genetic only and that you can change it, as long as you take good steps to eat and be healthy。 Eye opener when it comes about what we eat, that cancer doesn't have to be genetic only and that you can change it, as long as you take good steps to eat and be healthy。 。。。more

This book was given to me as a gift from one of my sisters。 There is not doubt that the advice in this book, both for those with and without cancer can be life-changing。 The combination of science, research, and true stories of individuals who have suffered from cancer made this a truly extraordinary book。
